Dr James Davies, Lord Woodbury: July Mentorial: Sermonette Ahh Greetings Dean Greetings: I often leave audiogrammes on the dreary state of the world, but I am pleased to report two bright items: the settlement of the Election Results in Afghanistan and the brokering of a deal between Hamas and Israel. I take it as a positive sign. I`m sure neither the Dean nor his scholarship care not a draught for either the Election results in Afghanistan nor the brokered deal between Hamas and Israel. The beauty of Quislings sayeth the Dean is that they can be told when to pout. On the Hamas-Israel set fire, the Dean assumes it`s an easy task; the US has done it so many times. On a more personal level I have been asked to plan Sunday services and to plan the hymns and anthems to be sung. I am looking through the Society`s official hymnal and find it most interesting in this regard. Obama, I am not worthy that thou should govern me Hmm. I`m not sure that would appeal much to liberal intellectuals dressing themselves up as labor radicals of the 1930s. I was at a Labor Museum belonging to a union other than my own and I was disappointed. The strategies of organizing that union were basically the same as my organization`s tactics. Where I one attributed great genius to my organization`s founders. I must conclude that all the successful trade unionists played from a common theme and were aided by a favorable political climate and the flow of public opinions in their direction during the economic dislocations of the 1930s. I am dismayed even the more so that the Dean had said as much many years ago, but that the Dean`s reaction to my realization was not an I told you so, but rather the Dean expressed his admiration for men of great courage in the unionist movement, particularly Jimmy Hoffa. Indeed I find to my dismay the Dean is an avid fan of all the Jimmy Hoffa movies: Fist (Sylvester Stallone), Blood Feud (Nicholas Blake) and Hoffa (Jack Nicolson). And the Dean also approvingly cites Hoffa`s repartee to a Senator who accused the President of a Teamster local of being a Communist: "If you want rid of that official ask the members who voted the official in to vote him out." Back to the service, I am planning. The Dean makes much sport of my church; he calls it a social club not a religion, a fancy dress party for former Catholics who cannot stomach the doctrines but like the show. Let`s move on to my next hymn from the Societal psalter. Nearer Obama than theeActually it is the Deanal view that the Historic President correctly explained his position when he said that the Tea Party incorrectly gauged the direction of the movements to change government from a series of prohibitions on what it cannot do to you into an activist force of what it can do for you. The crux of the problem is that we define liberty differently. Freedom of speech is not the unbridled right to express one`s politically offensive views which insult national minorities and immigrants. Freedom of speech however may give an elitist White Liberal that margin of hypocrisy to say pleasant sounding apothegms and then do the opposite. The Dean of course laughs at the Mentor whenever the Mentor finds himself too low on the totem pole to enjoy the privilege of being above restrictions placed on the masses. Freedom of Association is the right to join a union and pay its dues, whether you want to or not, because unions are good for you. Freedom of Religion is not a unbridled doctrine which enables the supposed devout from deciding which laws they choose to acknowledge. Indeed the institutional church which takes advantage of generous tax breaks should not be advising congregants to violate anti-discrimination laws. The congregation remains free to follow the smoke and mirrors of their choosing. Let me see where was in the Society`s collection of psalms. From a distance he speaks of peaceDean, this brings up two important points. Obama may have amused the Crown Heads of Europe with his selfie at Mandela`s funeral, but they aren`t angry that he has all their cell phones bugged. They`re jealous. And you should be proud of the Historic President for that reason. Indeed I was shocked that the dean should wish Obama the worst of luck in dialing with the Ukraine. I was shocked that the Dean does not even regard it as a country and won`t recognize that there is such a thing as a Ukrainian. The Dean calls it an invention of Joseph Stalin. Indeed. I refer the Dean to the authoritative NY Times which recognizes the Ukrainian state and people. I am even more horrified that the Dean believes Vladimir Putin to be within his rights and calls the Historic President an intermeddler fermenting a crisis to stay in power. Does the Dean say that the US shot down a civilian airliner too? I cannot see why the Dean is not rallying to the support of the Historic President to forge National Unity at this time and to protect the common interests of the American people. What did the Dean answer? Let the 53%, the 47% are carrying go fight the Russians to defend their welfare checks. Let me turn to the Society`s Hymnal: Obama and his faithfulNow that stanza might pass the liberal intellectuals who will be attending the service, only if they were blinded to the bitter sarcasm. I am cheered by your report that the Tea Party Movement is fragmenting over the Ukrainian crisis. While a few like the Dean adhere to non-interventionist, neo-isolationist views, most see the necessity of taking a positive role so that the US is a moral force in world politics spreading freedom and democracy. Yet I am chagrined by the Dean`s response that there is no common value system that would prevent fragmentation or civil war. Indeed the Dean accuses the Historic President of waging a civil war against the American People. The Dean has been saying such for at least 40 years. Yet, it is not the government which has weakened. "Due process" once meant judicial proceedings. Today it means a hit may be ordered at the direction of the Attorney General. Indeed, this is now an accepted practice. At one time, an evolving sense of morality prohibited torture. Today it is called "enhanced interrogation techniques." But even if the Dean is correct that the US has in these respects strayed from a Jeffersonian ideals, common ties should bid us to staying the course, behind the Historic President. It is on that note I bid you A Most Cheery Cheerio! He has done his darnedest to turn the clock back to before Gorbachov. This erstwhile ¨last of the tsars¨does not really control everything at all. Rumor has it that when Burlosconi – Vlad`s big crony and bent as a bent pin – was running Italy, Burly got him a dame to warm his bed. Burly is currently charged for consorting with under-aged girlies. Meanwhile, Vlad is presiding over a regime that is coming apart at the seams. Russia is divided into fiefdoms and if you`re safe in one, you ain`t in another. So, two Muscovites told me, who had come to England to be ¨famouse¨ (their English was extremely limited). However, they said that in Moscow, they were fairly safe but in Novgorod or St Petersburg, they would get eaten alive by the Mafia. The Mob runs Russia. There isn`t a single, shady deal they don`t have their finger in. And they`re rich. Stinking rich. Many of them come to London to launder their money there. They often pose as Poles – or people from Lithuania, which although it has a majority of Lets, also has about a third of the population, which is Russian. By the way, you or I – or any English-speaking speaker of Russian we might employ – would have our work cut out to hear the difference between Russian, Polish, or a Russian speaking Polish. The two languages are as like as two peas and especially the dialects of Western Russia run into the dialects of Eastern Poland and Poland, of course, was wrenched bodily west, when Stalin was boss. You meet many Russians around in London. And a lot of Poles. I don`t know the difference. Unless they speak pure Russian, when I can hear that it is pure Russian, having learned some Russian or, at least, enough to say ¨Shto eta¨ (What is this?). These characters have probably laundered rubla and with their ill-gotten gains are living it up in the lap of luxury in good ol` London town. Do you have them in New York, Florida or San Fran? No, well we do. They endure the rain of good old Blighty, where it is p___ing down half the year and drought the other half. People are not allowed to swill their cars off with the hose-pipe after cleaning as this would use too much water and since the reservoirs are piddling small…Well. Fortunately, a brim-full Thames burst its banks recently, so at least people will have sewage to wash their cars with. But this is getting off the subject, which is…well, OIL. Russia has heaps of it. Or at least, Siberia has. And the Independent Republic of Siberia does not exist. Nor ever will. It`s no use those Siberians getting stinking oil-rich now, is it? It`s bad enough that Kazakhstan, which has oil, cut the umbilical cord and drifted off on a slow boat to China. They are currently orbiting – very, very, slowly – Beijing, which is the New Empire of the Rising Sun. Yes, well it`s all a matter of oil and gas. Of course, the Russians have privatized oil. Proceeds of which now go into the pockets of magnates and Mafia bosses. Occasionally, the State strikes back and a head rolls and bank rolls fall. Vlad is not to be trifled with and he always gets his man. Angie gets the Lion`s Share of this Black Loot as it is exported westwards along pipelines to rival the Canadian-American pipeline (or pipe-dream?). Germany is very dependent on Russian oil. So are many other countries in the West. But not Britain, which has her own North Sea oil nor Spain, which is too far away. Virtually every other country does use Russian oil, however, and that bug-a-bear (bugger bear?), Putin is sitting there threatening to turn the tap – OFF. The Ukraine, of course, is very dependent on Russian oil. One turn of the tap and it`s Black Out for the whole country. Besides, they are surrounded by the Russians, soldiers on land and the navy at sea. No wonder the Ukrainians are clamoring for entry into the EU. Next thing you know, they`ll want full membership of OTAN. (NATO, to you!)they desperately want some kind of protection from their Big Neighbor. Well, I don`t know whether they`ll get it or not. I think the Crimea has been picked off, don`t you? But we may get Putin out. I don`t know. He wants to go down in history as `Stalin¨, the Man of Steel. Putin`s pretty good in the Do-Ko. He cuts a good figure in Karate garb, tossing the guys one way or the other. Well, as ex-KGB, he would have learned all the throws. Still, he`s pretty neat – or, on camera, he is. Pretty neat at poisoning, too. Especially with radioactive jobs. Didn`t he poison that guy, who became President of the Ukraine, and got called Scar Face on account of the mess radioactivity had made of his face. And what about that guy, who passed away in a London Hospital? We Brits made a stink about that but it didn`t help. And who gave poor Yassr Arafat the needle? The Israelis? No one, according to the French, who did the autopsy on him. Putin has also been queer bashing. Well, there are no niggers in Russia and Blessed few foreigners go there to work either on account of there ain`t none and ya mostly gets paid out in washers not rubla. They`re up in arms about it at the Winter Olympics and them guys is coming out in all directions. ¨Hey, guy, I`m one, you know.¨ Bless their hearts, the sod`s. Otherwise Putin is scape-goating them like crazy, making them a Whipping Boy for everything under the sun. Yeps, it`s a bit like Uganda, I guess. On`y the niggers in Russia is white (as shite). Now, let`s turn our attention to Barrack. With about three years to go, worries mar that guy`s once youthful visage. Leader of the Free World, he`s the only hope we got. Head of the largest democracy in the World – laurels claimed by India may be discounted on account of the Dirty Tricks Brigade – he`s the one we turn to in our Hour of Need. Well, you may get a Republican next time round. It`s about time those guys got a turn in power. Pace, Mitt, who couldn`t public speak for toffee and was a Mormon to boot. That Prince of Paupers, Georgy Porgy, was the last one. And the Houses of Congress are gradually and nicely filling up with Republicans. So, who`s for a Republican President? Stand up and be counted. Nopes, the US of A has two big problems: Drugs and Guns. The use of heroine was underlined by the demise of that actor guy – a darned good actor and director to boot (he should`ve shot his own death) – but now he`s as dead as a door nail, carried out feet first. When he had everything to live for, he chose to die. No accounting for that, I guess, boys! Guns are another problem. Voted by a grateful Congress to those noble boys, who did their patriotic duty, toting their own guns to battle in the War of Independence, they have become part of the American Way of Life (and Death). The Bonny-and-Clyde era of gangsters did the rest. Ah jes`cain`t say. I spoke to one Marseillaise (a street livin` john, not the anthem), who told me them drugs barons in Marseille is real mean, that ya ain`t rightly safe on the streets (where him lived) etc, so perhaps we will have more guns ownership over `ere. You need Protection, don`t you, guy. So I guess I`ll jes` not meddle in an American problem. So, that is my State-of-the-Nation address for this issue. Do not overestimate Mr Putin. He is not in charge of anything. Do not overestimate the Soviet Union. The old days of the Cold War are gone. They still possess nuclear weapons – most of them are stationed in the Ukraine, by the way, that wants to scrap them as obsolescent – but they are not really going to use them. For all of you, who have grown up in the Shadow of the Russian Bear, you can put your nightmares to one side. It ain`t goanna happen. I don`t think. (But I may be wrong, of course.) Not even oil will save Russ-iya. The deposits are not in Russia and the proceeds are being frittered away in all directions. On Mayfair ¨flats¨ for instance. AWESOME DAVID LAWRENCE: SCOTT Scott, a tall marine walked into Gleason`s Gym and said *** I`ve got to pass a physical fitness test. You have any time to train me?" *** Cool. I like training Marines. They are so much more real *** He was in good shape *** In my office, we discussed politics. I told him that our president is a weak liar, and I didn`t know how he could follow his orders. I couldn`t respect a commander in chief who sympathizes with the enemy and thinks the freedom of a deserter like Bergdahl was more important than containing five Taliban terrorists who would shortly try to kill us again. Scott surprised me when he said, "I`m not into politics. My job is just to kill or be killed." I was impressed by his focus. That`s what a soldier should be - a killing machine. It`s a shame that his commander in chief is a coward who doesn`t have his loyalty to a mission, but instead spends his time trying to make flowery, [in]ane speeches. All power to Scott. He does what he does without questioning it. It`s a shame men like him risk their lives for weaklings like Obama. I`d like to talk Scott out of Afghanistan. But I won`t try. America needs courageous men. America needs Scott. Republished fromAmerican Thinker Andy Martin, J. D.: DIRTY MUSIC AND GUN CONTROL Trinity parishioner Andy Martin will announce opposition to Trinity Church`s gun control, dirty music lawsuit Andy says the church may have been captured by "extreme leftists" Andy Martin is "a very strong supporter of the Second Amendment" Andy is a "very satisfied Wal-Mart customer" and issues a ringing endorsement of the company (New York) ( April 1, 2014) Trinity Wall Street parishioner Andy Martin is asking the vestry of Trinity Church ( Trinity Wall Street ), as well as the U. S. District Court in Delaware , to end a frivolous gun control lawsuit. At first I thought the rector had sent out an April` Fool`s joke. Then I did my research and found this crackpot lawsuit had been filed. I am a very happy Wal-Mart shopper and I note that Wal-Mart hasn`t even been allowed to open in New York City by the socialist Mafia that has taken control of local government. So Wal-Mart gun sales are not an issue of importance to New Yorkers. (I usually shop at Wal-Mart in New Hampshire , Florida and Hawaii .) I am a very strong supporter of the Second Amendment. In my own state of New Hampshire , as well as outside the New York City metro area, people believe in and live by the Second Amendment. Wal-Mart does not need a bunch of New York City leftists telling them how to meet the needs of America `s consumers. In fact, Wal-Mart is doing a better job of attracting supporters than most mainline Christian denominations, many of which have seen their churches shrink because of adherence to extreme leftist positions. I trust Wal-Mart executives more than I would trust the clergy of most churches. I am not aware of any discussions within the parish about filing frivolous lawsuits and enriching greedy law firms with Trinity cash. If the parish has been quietly captured by a faction of extreme leftists that is obviously a matter for concern. Trinity is a wonderful place and a beautiful church and I am distressed that someone within the church has created unnecessary divisiveness. Somewhere within the church the institution`s priorities have been distorted by too much money and not enough common sense. I plan to ask the vestry to drop this lawsuit and other dingbat-style activism, and also will advise the federal court of my opposition. I may be one of the more conservative members of the parish, but I accept most of the usual lefty, trendy nonsense of which the Episcopal Church is so often enamored. You can`t always agree with everyone about everything. Tolerance is important. But I don`t think church loonies should be able to use the parish`s financial resources to file junk lawsuits and to pad the pockets of greedy New York and Delaware law firms. While I am always distressed at the tone of popular culture and am fully sympathetic with the concepts underlying the lawsuit, I don`t think that an institution which is dependent on the First Amendment (a church) should be seeking to limit the First Amendment rights of others. No one has appointed Trinity Church to serve as the `trash police` of American popular culture. As for the `gun magazine` issues, they are nothing but liberal nonsense masquerading as `Christianity` and I find it offensive that a faction within my church has been captured by that delusion. I have no plans to leave the parish and I love my fellow parishioners, even the loony ones (Jesus might say, especially the loony ones). I am needed more than ever to add some sense of balance and rationality to the parish`s direction. Andy`s analysis predicted with uncanny accuracy how Barack Obama would "freeze up" in the White House. Andy remembers the disintegration of the U.S. Government under President Jimmy Carter. Andy`s analysis today focuses on the Russian attack on a Malaysian airliner Thursday, and President Obama`s casual response to the murder of 300 passengers. Republican U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin compares the Iran hostage crisis (1979-1980) to President Barack Obama`s current paralysis in the Oval Office Andy says America is now being "held hostage" by a president who has only a tenuous connection to American exceptionalism, a president whose lack of competence and whose emotional detachment are creating a "perfect storm" for American foreign policy and American national security Andy says Obama is a worse president than Jimmy Carter (Manchester, NH) ( July 18, 2014) Thirty-five years after the Afghani mujahideen fought off the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, we are once again fighting the Russians. Quite unexpectedly, the Cold War has returned after the senseless slaughter of 298 airline passengers and President Barack Obama`s detached reaction to the attack on these helpless human beings. Those who missed the "Carter Years" of Carter`s confused and ambiguous foreign policy can now relive them as the "Obama Years." Chaos has returned. History is repeating itself. America is once again being held hostage. This time by our own president. Obama does not appreciate or accept American exceptionalism, which is why he is a colossal failure as a president. I have delved deeply into the psyche of the political fraud Barack Obama and analyzed the source of his ambivalence and antipathy to our great nation. When Obama announced his candidacy in 2007 I prepared a "Psychological Profile of Barack Obama." The Profile is part of my book "Obama: The Man Behind the Mask." After sifting through the evidence, I predicted if Obama reached the Oval Office (pp. 9-10 of "Mask"): Can his personality stand the stress? Probably not…And, ultimately, he will get tired of himself…Obama`s personality matrix left Obama weak inside, weak under the surface, "all sail and no anchor." He learned to avoid conflict, not fight…He will strive to be a strong leader on the surface, using powerful language and images; but inside he will still be the pied piper of powerlessness. And know it...War is war, but war is also psychology. Obama`s psychology is weak. His presentation today [in February 2007] was weak, and his approach to dealing with his adversaries will ultimately come to be seen as weak. Sound familiar? Sound like the Obama we know and do not love? I analyzed him and predicted his weakness in office - in 2007. Even liberals have finally realized Obama is not a fighter. He won`t fight for their causes. If he won`t fight for his "base," why would he battle on behalf of a country he doesn`t love and could care less about? Against a cold-blooded KGB agent like Vladimir Putin, Obama doesn`t stand a chance. And we are the victims. That is why Obama was so unemotional and detached on Thursday when he learned about the Russian attack on the Malaysian airliner. That is also why we still don`t know what he did on the evening of September 11, 2012 when our mission in Benghazi, Libya was attacked. Obama can`t deal with the real world and embrace his obligation to defend our Constitution and our national security. Obama prefers to live in the fantasy world of campaign fundraisers and celebrity hobnobbing. Obama is still "The Man Behind the Mask." I got him right in 2007. Some of our members read the Wall Street Journal for inspiration before preparing most scholarly tracts. At a recent discussion of the US war crimes, one of our members raised Mr Lietzau`s most fascinating article on the HISTORIC PRESIDENT`s Barak Hussein Obama`s failure to understand the torture camp at Guantanamo Bay. Publication of Mr Lietzau`s item is a reason why US news media to the discerning reader is treated as somewhat less credible than commercial advertising. At least with commercial advertisement there is a product available to be purchased. With the Media there has been nothing but the steady drum beat of empty propaganda. Lietzau claims that the tortures administered by US civilians and military are "mythological." Indeed the historic record reveals that not only did the US engage in physical and mental tortures, it hired psychologists to recommend specific physical and mental assaults including water boarding and repetition of the Barney theme song for days on end. US civilian DOJ personnel all attorneys like Mr Lietzau wrote furious memoranda of law recommending specific tortures and requesting permission to be present during the bashing. It is obvious to us that the title "Secretary for rule of law and detainee policy" is a misnomer. The US has devolved into a state of non-law. Mr Lietzau assures us that the miscreants who administered the treatments were "punished." While it is true that a female enlisted woman, a Specialist 4 was court-martialed for noxious behavior, there were Emails from the White House directing all that was done. None of the DOJ attorneys in their flowing silk suits, military and contract psychologists, administration officials or Halliburton reprobates was hauled into court. The Historical record reveals that the only other persons punished were Bradley Manning who was court-martialed, Julian Assange now a refugee in The Ecuadorian embassy in London and Edward Snowden now given asylum by the Russian Federation. Their crimes: disclosing US war Crimes. White Liberals couldn`t feel so good when what they were up to seeped into public view. Mr Lietzau praises indefinite detention and THE DUE PROCESS HITLIST, all necessary he says to combat somebody or something. Coupled with the massive surveillance of the American people and the Congress by an administration gone out of control, the picture of the rule of law that Mr Lietzau claims to uphold is grim. William Buckley once said that Nazism is liberalism gone wild. The sure sign of a White Liberal is an inflated sense of asserted moral superiority and some breast beating about how great they art, coupled with massive hypocrisy and pure sloganism. By this criterion, Mr Lietzau certainly qualifies. It is on that note, The Society, bids you A Most Cheery Cherio, Sincerely, FOR THE SOCIETY, HARRISON ALFRED ANDREWS HA/dfs ----------------------------- Jeff Wordsmith: Hello, I´m Johnny Cash Johnny Cash could trace his lineage back to the Scots and the English. In fact, on the Scottish side, he traced himself back to one King of Scotland, named Malcolm, and even visited his ¨relatives¨, the lairds of Fife. This seems a pretty tall story to me and I prefer to think of him as what he was, a dirt-broke, dirt-farmer from Arkansas. And one of the most gifted Country and Western artists of our time. He was possibly a ¨Texan¨, too. Probably, the last band he toured with in 1990 was ¨The Highwaymen¨ and that was three Texans plus the guy from Arkansas. He was very much into drugs. As a prodigy of the mid-50´s and 60´s, drugs were almost unavoidable. He claimed himself to have ¨tried every drug there was to try¨. He took amphetamines and barbiturates –probably up´s and down´s in those days – and became addicted. It didn´t stop him from being a fine song-writer and singer, actor and author. That just burst out from the man. Probably, however, it underlay his mysticism. When his elder brother, Jack, died at age 15, nearly cut in two by a buzz-saw, he claimed to have had a premonition of it and seen it coming. He also claimed to have had at least one near-death experience and having been guided out of a cave by a light breeze and a sort of light at the end of a tunnel. When his wife died, he said, ¨The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her.¨ But he also went on to talk about her as if she had really appeared to him and probably she had, at least in his own mind. He was a very devout Christian. He contracted a great friendship with the Evangelist, Billy Graham. He also recorded himself speaking the whole of the New Testament of the King James l Version of the Bible and that is quite some going seeing the length the Good Book has. He was a Southern Baptist by upbringing and that explains a lot. However, drugs could have been at the back of his mysticism. Reality blurs, flickers, sinks into a dream, and then flares up, clearer than life itself, when you hallucinate. He was born J.R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas, on February 1932, because apparently his parents couldn´t think of a name and he remained JR until his enlistment in the Air Force, when, since they required a first name, he became John R. Cash. He served the Air Force from 7th July, 1950, mainly in Germany, where he was assigned to security, and became one of the first to pick up the news of Stalin´s death. He started his first band in Landsberg, Germany, and called it ¨The Landsberg Barbarians¨. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant in 1954 and returned to Texas. In 1951, when in Air Force training, he met his bride-to-be, seventeen-year old Vivian Liberto, who he married in 1954. They divorced in 1966 due to Cash´s drug and alcohol abuse, his constant touring, his affairs with other women and his very close relationship to June Carter. He proposed to June in 1968 and the two married in Franklin, Kentucky. He stayed married to June for thirty-five years, with whom he worked together and mourned for her when she died in 2003 for four months when he died of a broken heart. More prosaically of diabetes. He had been previously diagnosed with a neurological complaint. He was seventy-three. Not a bad age considering all the drug and alcohol abuse. He had, however, had double bypass surgery in 1988, which patched him up. Cash carefully cultivated a romantic outlaw image. He got busted seven times for misdemeanors, a couple of times involving drugs, from which he got off lightly due to them being prescription medicines. Cash felt great compassion for prisoners and performed many times in jails around the country, starting off at St Quentin´s prison on January 1st 1988. He even performed at Osterbaek Jail in Sweden and released an album Pa Osterbaek – At Osterbaek. He also felt very strong affinities for Native Americans as expressed in many of his songs and Apache Tears, The Ballad of Ira Hayes and the album. The Bitter Tears of the American Indian, brought out his strong feelings. Notwithstanding, he met pretty-well all the American Presidents starting with Richard Nixon and seems to have felt very great affection toward them, too, particularly for The Peanut Farmer, Jimmy Carter, himself a Southern Boy. He was first invited to perform for the White House in 1970. Johnny Cash was well-known for his rebelliousness. But also for his sober and humble demeanor. Typically, he started all his performances with, ¨Hello, I´m Johnny Cash¨. His dark performance clothing earned him the nickname, ¨The Man in Black¨. In 1971, Cash wrote ¨The Man in Black¨ in which he explained himself. We´re doing mighty fine I do suppose And so he wore black. He also said, ¨The old are still neglected, the poor are still poor, the young are still dying before their time, and we´re not making moves to make things right.¨ A lot of his interest came from the Vietnam War, which dominated the late 60´s. In Welfare Cadillac, he ironically explained his views on Welfare. ¨I´ve never worked, I´ve been poor all my life…¨ This house I live in is mine, but it´s a shack. ¨But I´ve been happy to drive in a new Cadillac.¨ He goes on to say how come he´s got his new Cadillac. ¨I get a check every month from the Federal Government¨. Moreover, ¨My kids get free lunch¨. What he thinks of the American public - ¨These other folks are fools/They´re paying taxes to send/My kids to school¨. Soon, the Welfare check will go up, he says, and then his wife is looking forward to buying her own ¨new Cadillac¨. My Editor would agree. Most of you would, too. Welfare is a form of enslavement, confirming the lazy in a profligate way of life. But what to put in its place? Particularly, when the shoe pinches as it does today. ¨The poor are still poor¨ ¨The poor ye shall have with ye always,¨ but not ME. With his heart full of trepidation and not trusting to his luck at all, he apparently turned up to the Sun Recording Studios and got himself signed up in 1955. His first record, Cry, Cry, Cry, made it to the top and he was home. He switched to Columbia Records in 1958. They paid 5% royalties instead of 3%. Don´t Take Your Guns to Town was a big hit. In the mid-1970´s, Cash´s popularity started to wane and the number of his songs started to decline. He blamed Columbia for not promoting his songs and switched back to Sun. he had so many Big Friends, it is hard to name them all. Early on, he jammed with Elvis and later helped promote Bob Dylan, who remembered and supported him. Between 1969 and 1971, he starred in his own TV show, the Johnny Cash Show, on ABC Network. By the early 1970´s, he had crystallized his image as The Man in Black. He apparently was a forerunner of early Punk. His styles included Country and Western, Rockabilly and several others so that it is difficult to characterize his musical production. In all, he wrote over a thousand songs and released dozens of albums. He has been dubbed ¨the philosopher prince of American country music¨. He declared himself the biggest sinner of them all, which he probably was. He hit the bottle and became an addict in the late 1950´s. by the mid-1960´s, his drug addiction was probably at its worse and seriously blurring his judgment. In 1968 – just before he proposed to his second wife – he kicked off. In 1983, he relapsed into addiction. Again, he fought it off. In 1983, he starred in a TV film, The Pride of Jesse Hallam, winning fine reviews for a film that called attention to adult illiteracy. For a long time, he starred in Christmas Shows. He also wrote two autobiographies. In 1990, he toured with The Highwaymen. He died, of course, in 2003. What else is there to say of this remarkable man? He had come a long way from the Arkansas boy with his trousers´ breeches hanging out and even from the Air Force Sergeant he had been. He had met US Presidents. He knew all the Greats of Show Biz. Buoyed up by an incredible talent. Sustained by a wonderful wife. A many-faceted and versatile man. He had a career of at least twenty years and his popularity continued to reverberate until his death. He had a heart for the poor, compassion in particular for prisoners and Native Americans, but no time for Welfare. He made it to the top and stayed there. A genius. There´s no other word for it. ¨Hello, I´m Johnny Cash¨. Jeff Wordsmith |
